Young children are always changing and growing at different paces. As a parent, it can be hard to know what is developmentally “normal” and what might benefit from more support. These assessments are designed to capture a holistic view of young children’s development and provide tailored recommendations based on their individual strengths and challenges. These can be helpful for kids with developmental delays (e.g., speech delay), kids who are having trouble functioning easily in school, suspected neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., Autism Spectrum), or kids with complex medical backgrounds (e.g., premature birth, genetic conditions). These evaluations include:

  • A 90-minute interview with parents (Typically over video chat). Parents are the experts on their children. In this session We want to hear about your child’s unique strengths and challenges. We’ll also go through a clinical interview to gather information on all areas of development including early cognitive skills, motor skills, language, play and social skills, emotional and behavioral regulation, and adaptive skills (e.g., toilet training, sleep).

  • A naturalistic observation. Children tend to behave differently in different settings. For this reason, we believe an important part of understanding your child is direct observation of them in a more naturalistic environment like daycare, school, or camp.

  • Parent and teacher rating scales. We will send 2-4 rating scales over email to get quantitative data on parents’ and teachers’ perspectives on things like social skills, adaptive skills, and emotional and behavioral functioning.

  • A 2-3 hour testing session in office. We conduct assessments specifically designed for young children that measure early cognitive skills (e.g., problem solving), language and communication, motor skills, social and play skills, and regulation (e.g., attention, body, behavior, and emotions).

  • Phone consultation with providers (as needed). It can be helpful to gather the perspectives of important people in the child’s life such as different therapists or teachers.

  • A 90-minute feedback session (Typically over video chat). We spend time synthesizing all the data points from the pieces listed above and we review the results. This includes the data from the direct testing, strengths, areas of challenge, diagnoses if relevant, and recommendations. We love visual aides here, so we tend to write things out on some quick slides to share as we discuss. We will then send you those slides after our meeting.

  • A comprehensive report. We document all pieces of the evaluation in a long report that can be shared with school, providers, and/or anyone in the child’s life who may find it helpful. Parents are in charge of this report and who to send it to.
