How Educators Can Talk to Parents About
Psychological Testing
One of the most important (and sometimes most uncomfortable) conversations an educator can have is suggesting to a parent that their child may benefit from a psychological assessment.
Done well, this conversation can be the turning point in a child's educational journey. Done poorly, it can damage trust or leave families feeling alarmed or defensive. Here's how to approach it with care.
Start with Strengths
You are not diagnosing a student; but you do have a wealth of experience interacting with and observing the student. Stick to concrete, specific observations rather than labels. Instead of saying "I think your child has ADHD," try: "I've noticed that Johnny has a really hard time completing tasks before moving on to the next thing, even when he's clearly interested. I see this pretty consistently across different subjects, and I want to make sure he has the support he needs." Specific observations are less threatening and more actionable.
Frame Testing as a Tool, Not a Verdict
Many parents associate the word "testing" with judgment or labeling. Help reframe it: a psychological assessment is a way of gathering information about how a child learns, processes, and engages with the world — so that the adults around them can support them more effectively. It's not about finding what's wrong; it's about understanding what's going on.
Be a Bridge, Not a Gatekeeper
Educators can open the door, but don't need to push families through it. Offer to share resources, connect them with your school counselor, or provide a warm referral to a local psychologist. At Brinkley Psychology, we welcome calls from educators and are happy to speak with families who have questions before committing to an evaluation. A little guidance at the right moment can make all the difference.
